Imphal, August 04 2009:
Commemorating the historic mass rally of August 4, 2007, the 12th Integrity Day was observed today under the aegis of the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO).
The August 4, 1997 rally is believed to be the biggest rally staged in Manipur till date.
A public meeting followed the historic rally where resolutions were adopted to safeguard the territory of Manipur.
The Integrity Day observance held at AMUCO office was graced by AMUCO president Yangsosong Koireng, AMESCO president LS Guite and president of the Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur L Memchoubi as presidium members.
Speaking at the occasion, Yangsosong Koireng observed that Manipur started facing threats to its territorial integrity since it became a part of India in 1949 .
The Consitution of India does not guarantee the status quo of the boundary of Manipur, he said.
As such, it is up to the people to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur, Yangsosong said.
Observing that the State police have been acting on their whims, without any objection from the Government, the AMUCO president decried that all those killed in the last 4/5 years were given the tag of 'insurgents'.
Apparently referring to the Khwairamband Market killing, Yangsosong asserted that Judicial enquiry, not Magisterial enquiry, should be instituted into the incident or an independent body should be asked to probe the firing.
