Imphal, January 21:
In protest against the indifferent attitude of the Government of India towards the plight of the people of Manipur and elsewhere who have been living under the shadow of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, a month-long campaign would be launched at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi starting from January 25, the eve of Republic Day celebration of India.
According to information received by the press, human rights activists and other delegates from Manipur have already left Imphal for New Delhi yesterday to participate in the month-long drive to be launched under the banner of 'Campaign against militarization, immunity of Armed Forces Special Powers Act'.
About a dozen women who came out on the street and disrobed themselves, protesting against AFSPA in front of Kangla Fort where the 17 Assam Rifles Battalion was then stationed in the wake of the public outcry against the custodial killing of Thangjam Manorama are said to be among the delegates from Manipur who will be participating in the month-long protest.
Along with deliberation on the relevant reports of the UN Human Rights Committee (1991), Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee (2005), India UN CEDAW Report (2006), UN CERD (2007), Administrative Reform Committee (2007), various recommendations will also be adopted for the repeal of AFSPA 1958 by different committees and International organizations during the month-long campaign.
