Kohima, November 02:
The sustained and unparalleled struggle of Irom Chanu Sharmila against the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 is not only for Manipur but for whole India, remarked social activists Shabnam Hashmi.
Speaking as guest of honour at the release function of the book Sharmila- A Mission for Peace written by Dr O Kulabidhu at Centenary Hall, MU, Hashmi observed that all the people should lend support to the struggle of Sharmila.
The mind set to subdue people's movement and outcry at any place by force is an outdated thinking.
It has been accepted worldwide that no force can suppress people's justified movements, Hashmi asserted.
As such, the Government of India should realise that the voices of peoples' angst and resentment can never be suppressed with guns, she stated.
The book release function was held in conjunction with the three day long observance organised by human rights groups based at different parts of India in recognition of the contributions made by women towards peace in the world.
The release function was graced by Dean, School of Social Sciences MU Prof N Joykumar, Head of Political Sciences Department MU Prof Ksh Bimola and mother of Irom Chanu Sharmila, Irom Shakhi as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Shakhi said, "My daughter is no longer mine.
I plea to the people to save the life of my daughter".
