Imphal, February 24 2011: Recalling the contribution of King Gambhirsingh in restoring the independence of Manipur from Awa/Burmese after the 'Seven Years Devastation', Manipur People's Party (MPP) today observed the commemorative event of signing the Treaty of Yandaboo, 1826 at its office today.

The Treaty of Yandaboo was signed on this day in 1826 between King Gambhirsingh and the British.

The latter helped the former in defeating the Burmese marauders from occupying the then independent kingdom of Manipur.

The treaty also led to closing the infamous chapter of 'Seven Years Devastation' in the history of Manipur.

During the commemorative event attended by party president Dr Nimaichand Luwang as chief guest, party leaders paid tributes to king Gambhirsingh and recalled his contribution in restoring the lost independence of Manipur.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Nimaichand said that people of Manipur suffered a lot during the period 'Seven Years Devastation'.

But the suffering came to an end following the signing of Treaty of Yandaboo.

It was on this day that the treaty was signed and it is a very important day for all the people of Manipur.

The contribution of king Gambhirsingh in chasing away the Burmese invaders from the soil of Manipur should be not be forgotten by the present generation because it becoming all the more relevant today, Dr Nimaichand said.

Vice president of the party L Jatra observed that the observance is more relevant and significant in the present context of Manipur.

There may be political freedom in Manipur today, but the people are yet to enjoy economic and social freedom, he noted.

Dr Chandramani, who is not only the Deputy Chief Minister of the State but also the former president of the party and former Minister Prof Gangmumei Kamei spoke on issues related to Treaty of Yandaboo as resource persons at the occasion.
