As in previous years, Drivers' Day was observed today in different parts of the State along with paying befitting tributes to the departed drivers, presentation of gifts to their surviving family members and honouring efficient drivers.
All Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association observed the Day by organising a function at its MG Avenue office with retired Director of Health Services Dr Ch Chandramani and Association president M Ibohal as chief guest and functional president respectively.
All those who spoke at the occasion said the role and importance of drivers in the society as a whole has been enhanced by the sacrificial spirit and service of the truck and bus drivers in ferrying essential goods and people.
Taking serious note of the police action in deflating the tyres and taking away commodities from the trucks when they arrived at Imphal after remaining stranded for many days along the National Highways, Association president M Ibohal said the Association would discuss what necessary action can be taken up in connection with the incident.
The Association also presented gifts to the surviving family members of the departed drivers.
Mayai Lambi Drivers' Welfare Association also observed its 18th Drivers' Day at Wangoi Bazar today and paid homage to the departed members of the Association.
Gifts were also distributed to the senior most drivers as well as young drivers who are servicing along the Mayai Lambi route currently.
The 18th Drivers' Day celebration was also held at Khuman Lampak Central bus parking with general secretary of AITUC Manipur State Committee L Sotinkumar Singh as chief guest and vice president of AMRTD & MWU S Manglem Singh as functional president.
Deputy Labour Commissioner G Tombi Sharma, social worker A Rajen Sharma, trade union leader and president of Petroleum Land Transport Workers' Federation of India AS Nungsang Ao, convenor of Petroleum Land Transport Workers Federation of India, Dimapur Setuo Angami and Manager of Ching Jen Service, Dimapur Binod Kumar Jain were also present at the occasion as guests of honour.
The 18th Drivers' Day celebration organised under the aegis of All Manipur Petroleum Tankers Drivers' Union was attended by Padmashree MK Binodini Devi, editor of Freedom RK Ranendrajit and Union president Y Bhupenchandra Ghosh as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
The day was also observed by Imphal-Ukhrul Road Drivers' Union at Yaingangpoki , by Rural Drivers' Union at Kumbi Lai Achouba mandop and by Makha Leikai Sugnu Road Drivers' Union at Sarou today.
