Irom Sharmila scholarship for girl students

Acknowledging Irom Sharmila Chanu's unrelenting campaign against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and advocating peace and humanity, a Pune-based NGO has instituted a scholarship for higher education that would give free education to 39 girl students of Manipur every year.
The scholarship will be given on December 10 every year on the occasion of International Human Rights day, a statement issued by SARHAD, the NGO, said today.
Sharmila has been on a fast since November 5, 2000, after Assam Rifles personnel mowed down ten civilians near a bus stand at Malom.
She is being force-fed through her nose by the Government at the security ward of JNIMS close to her Konpal Kongkham Leikai residence in Imphal East.
"In order to honor her dedication to a cause and as a step towards establishing a close bond between Pune, Maharashtra and the students from the NorthEastern States of India, SARHAD Pune has instituted a scholarship for higher education in her name," the statement issued by SARHAD's founder president Sanjay Nahar, said.

The scholarship will start from the year 2012-13 and all the 39 girl-students from Manipur would be given the scholarship for higher education and other professional courses.
SARHAD said the scholarship would cover the entire expenses of these students including their lodging, boarding and tuition fees after they pass their 12th standard examination till they finish their degree courses.
Other than SARHAD a few of the colleges in Pune will chip in for the scholarship.
The 39 students is in acknowledgement of Sharmila's age, who is 39. It would be granted to them when they take admission to degree courses like BA, B Com, B Sc, BCA and BJ (Journalism) at Sarhad College as well as other colleges affiliated to Pune University, the statement said.
To select these students, SARHAD has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of M Rahman, ex-Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, it said while informing that the organization is planning to launch various initiatives for the preservation of human rights in the North East as well as Kashmir.
