Imphal, September 27 2010:
One RCC market shed of Singjamei Keithel collapsed at about 9 am today.
However, there was no report of any casualty.
Just like other typical market sheds of Manipur, the one that broke down today was also exclusively occupied by women, majority of them being vegetable vendors.
There were around just six vendors when the roof plaster of the market shed started falling down in pieces.
Soon it was followed by sounds of cracking.
|
Immediately, the women vendors jumped off the shed saving themselves from any casualty.
One Apabi, a vendor at the market shed, said that only steel rods remained of the two northern most pillars after this morning's break down.
All the mortar mixture of sand and cement have peeled off.
Following the sudden break down of the pillars, the roof collapsed as a whole.
The market shed was built in 1992 .
Even as some other market sheds built in the same period have been standing till today, people are wary of going near them because there are tell-tale signs of lack of quality control.
The concrete gets peeled off on just being touched.
Meanwhile, people living near the market have appealed to the authority concerned to look into the matter before there is any further casualty.
Low quality in the works executed for construction of public places have been the bane of the State Government for long.
This was not the first time that a market shed has collapsed, and even educational institutions have been found below par during earlier inspection drives conducted by student organisations in the last few years.
