UCM boycotts Rio's visit, calls general strike

Imphal, May 27 2011: United Committee Manipur (UCM) has boycotted the proposed visit of Nagaland Chief Minister Nephiu Rio to Senapati tomorrow.

UCM has also announced a general strike all over Manipur from 5 am to 6 pm tomorrow.

Announcing this at a press conference in its Lamphel office, UCM president Yumnamcha Dilipkumar said that the decision to boycott the visit of Nephiu Rio has been taken as it is an attempt to disintegrate Manipur.

Had it been a normal visit by a Chief Minister of the neighbouring State, UCM as well as the people of Manipur would have accorded warm welcome in good spirit.

But the proposed visit of Nephiu Rio to Senapati under a hidden agenda of disintegrating Manipur amid the preparations being made for the observance of 10th The Great June Uprising on June 18 is like poking inside a bee hive, Dilipkumar said.

The possibility of yet another mass upheaval when the wrath of the people who are ready to sacrifice their lives for the cause of protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur directed against Nephiu Rio could not be ruled out, Dilipkumar cautioned, while calling upon the Centre and the State Government to ensure Nephiu Rio does not visit Senapati so as to avoid such unfortunate turn of the event.

Dilipkumar further observed that the proposed tripartite talk at Senapati on May 30 is like the two faces of the same coin.

Pointing out that two rounds of talk between the representatives of the Centre/State Governments, on one hand, and the representatives of UNC, which is a frontal organisation of NSCN (IM), and its Committee for Alternative Arrangement, on the other hand, have already been conducted, Dilipkumar said that UCM could never look up such talks of instigating anger among the people of Manipur lightly.

The Centre and the State Government should remember the suffering of the people when economic blockade was imposed along the National Highway 39 for two months.

The efforts being made to hold talk with those who have not only been declared wanted fugitives by the State Government but have also been directed to be arrested by the Court have shown that there is no law.

Talks with the same people who welcomed the Chief Minister of Manipur with ''Welcome to South Nagaland' last year and protested with banner inscribed with 'We boycott communal Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh' at Ukhrul would be an insult to the people of Manipur, Dilipkumar contended.

Interference of the Centre in the law and order issue, which is within the purview of the State, is akin is disrespect to the Chief Minister of Manipur.

So, understanding the sentiments of the people, the State as well as the Centre would prevent any visit with the agenda of disintegrating Manipur, Dilipkumar added.
