Imphal, October 24 2011:
The All Manipur Student Guardians' Organisation has raised strong objection to the Government's idea of giving 50 per cent grace marks to Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) qualified candidates in the recruitment of primary teachers.
Speaking to media persons today, general secretary of the organisation O Yaima asserted that the Government's decision of giving 50 per cent grace marks to TET qualified candidates in the recruitment of Primary and Upper Primary Teachers under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was illogical.
This policy of giving undue advantage to TET qualified candidates was absurd.
This policy has also severely demoralised trained and BEd degree holders besides rendering all the efforts of undergoing teachers' training and securing BEd degree purposeless, Yaima said.
He also asserted that trained teachers can teach students much better than those teachers selected on the basis of simply passing a test of just one hour and a half.
According to a notification issued by the Education (S) Department, the essential qualifications specified for the Primary teachers are the candidates should possess Class XII certificate and should have undergone elementary teachers training.
The desirable qualifications of the candidates should be Graduates, BEd degree holders and having knowledge of Manipur.
For Upper Primary teachers, the essential qualifications are Graduate with BEd or Diploma in teachers' training.
The desirable qualifications are Post Graduates with knowledge of Manipur.
TET can be taken as an entry point to the profession of teaching but no undue advantage should be given to TET qualified candidates, the guardians asserted.
The policy of giving undue advantage to TET qualified candidates would be disastrous to education scenario of the State in the long run, the guardians' organisation cautioned.
