Imphal, November 09 2011:
President of Manipur People's Party (MPP) Dr Nimaichand Luwang has asserted that the arrest and subsequent detention of Vice President of the party Y Mangi under National Security Act is politically motivated.
Addressing a press conference at the party office here today, Dr Nimaichand informed that a joint meeting of the office bearers and Advisory Committee members of the party has viewed the detention very seriously and resolved to investigate into the matter.
Contending that the detention of a senior party leader is unreasonable, Dr Nimaichand pointed out that similar cases involving even Minister and MLAs have been reported in the past, but no one had ever been detained under NSA.
Dr Nimaichand disclosed that his party would not object if Y Mangi wants to contest in the election from jail.
However, there has been no definite discussion in this regard.
It may be recalled that five persons were apprehended by police along with a 9mm pistol with six live rounds on October 30 at Khagempalli Panthak in Imphal West when they were coming in a Bolero Jeep which reportedly belongs to Y.Mangi, Vice-President of MPP.
