Just hundred days away from today, to complete 10 years of hunger strike, Irom Sharmila the hunger striker of Manipur demanding the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers' Act-1958 (AFSPA) from the whole of Manipur, is about to create history.
The Just Peace Foundation, an Imphal based organisation propagating Irom Sharmila's cause has kicked-off its '100-day count down' campaign programme today in Imphal when Irom Sharmila will complete 10 years of fast-unto-death agitation on November 1 .
On November 2 in the year 2000, 10 civilians of Malom in the outskirt of Imphal had fallen from the bullets of the security forces firing.
A young girl by then, Irom Sharmila refused to take food in protest against the firing incident and started demanding the repeal of the draconian law AFSPA-1958 from the whole of Manipur.
After few days of agitation Sharmila was arrested by the State force on the charge of attempting to commit suicide.The charge against the hunger striker by the state administration is that fast-unto-death amounts to taking one's life.
Since then she has been nose-fed with liquid food as she refuses to take any food at JN Hospital security ward.
To commemorate the completetion of 10 years of fast-unto-death agitation of Sharmila, prominent human rights activists and social workers of the state on Sunday launched the countdown programme at Manipur Press Club organised by Just Peace Foundation.
