Manipur Irrigation & Flood Control and Youth Affairs Minister, N Biren who inspected fields irrigated by the Thoubal and Imphal barrages today informed media persons that the state government has chalked out a plan to combat any situation of flood.
The Minister accompanied by officials of the IFCD today inspected the fields that had been irrigated with water from the Thoubal and Imphal barrages.
During the inspection visit, Minister Biren told media persons that the government has drawn up a plan to combat flood and as a part of the plan, construction of retaining walls on the embankment of Imphal river has started.
The Thoubal barrage which is targeted at irrigatting the fields covering upto the distance of 29.11 km from the barrage site to the left, has irrigated 28 km so far.
The volume of water of the barrage is 8 cubic meter.
When the construction of Thoubal Multipurpose project is completed, the volume will be 28 cubic meter.
The Minister was apparently satisfied on seeing the well-irrigated fields in Leirongthel, Khoidum area, etc.
under the command area of the left canal of the barrage.
Minister Biren also inspected the fields irrigated by the Imphal barrage located at Oinam Sawombung.
The construction works of the Imphal barrage had commenced from 1975/76, and supply of irrigation water in the fields located in Wangoi and surrounding areas began from 1986 .
Earlier, it irrigated about 900 hectare but this year, irrigation in 4000 hectare is being targeted.
At the end of the inspection, the Minister also visited the site of the construction of retaining wall on the embankments of the Imphal river.
Regarding the action plan of the government to prevent flood, Minister Biren said that the first phase of the plan covers strengthening of the banks of Imphal, Kongba, Thoubal and Iril rivers with construction of retaining walls which has been completed.
He expressed confidence that the plan to prevent flood will be successful and it will save the people from having to face sufferings of flood.
Saying that the plan is scheduled to be completed within a targeted period, he urged all concerned not to create any hindrance in taking up the works.
