Imphal, December 11 2009: The Naga Peoples' Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) along with Naga Women's Union, Manpur (NWUM) and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) observed the 61st International Human Rights Day yesterday at Oinam hill village in Senapati district.

The theme of the observance was "Remember Oinam:Embrace Diversity; End Discrimination".

Villagers from the area who survived Operation Bluebird attended the programme.

Phamhring Sengul, Convener of NPMHR informed in a press release that victims of Operation Bluebird recalled the brutal assault on their rights by the security forces in 1987.They also pointed out that despite the lapse of 22 years, the state is yet to deliver justice.

It is worth remembering that during Operation Bluebird, Oinam and surrounding villages were completely cordoned off and no individuals including the Chief Minister of Manipur was allowed to get inside to assess the situation.

Many villagers were shot dead, while some died of shock and starvation.

Villagers were also tortured, raped, and subjected to other cruel and degrading treatment by security forces.

Some women were forced to give birth in the opin in front of everyone, the press release stated.

Participants at the observance pointed out that the subjection of the Nagas and others in North East to military rule with the continued imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and other similar draconian laws.

NPMHR, NWUM and ANSAM reaffirmed their commitment to fight for justice of the victims, the press released stated.
