Imphal, December 09 2011:
The Union Home Ministry has directed the concern authority to check the basic problems faced by all the police stations in the state and take care of their deficiencies and lack of facilities to allow them to function properly.
According to a highly placed source, the Union Home Ministry has specifically instructed the concern authority to inspect all the 89 Police Stations in the state including nine women police stations and check the shortcomings of these police stations.
It further said that a police station should have at least two vehicles.
The SPs, DSPs and Inspectors have been further instructed to personally pay a visit to all their respective police stations instead of sitting idle in their offices and see that all the necessary requirements for the proper functioning of the police stations are met.
The 89 police stations include some recently opened police stations.
There are 10 police stations in Imphal District including a newly constructed one.
In Imphal East there are 11 police stations including six newly established ones.
In Thoubal another six police stations have been constructed recently bringing the total number of police stations in the district to 13.Nine police stations are there in Bishnupur district out of which three have been newly constructed.
Likewise Chandel has seven police stations including two newly built ones, Churachandpur and Tamenglong have seven police stations each out of which two each have been newly constructed.
Senapati has 14 police stations, eight of them are newly constructed and finally Ukhrul has 11 police stations, two being newly constructed.
From among the total 89 police stations established throughout the state, there is one women police station each in every District Head Quarters.
Apart from the SP who is in charge of a whole district, a DIG Range is also placed in charge of every two districts.
DIG Range I, Kailun is also the SP in-charge of Imphal West.
DIG Range II, Chandramani is in charge of Thoubal and Chandel.
DIG Range III, G Bimol is in charge of Bishnupur and Churachandpur.
The post of DIG Range IV which is also to be in charge of Tamenglong, Senapati and Ukhrul is still vacant, the source said.
The source further revealed that a sum of Rs 10,000 per month was given for the maintenance of the vehicles in the police stations previously.
But the amount has not been disbursed to some of the police stations for quite a long time and as a result some of the vehicles which have become worn out have not been mended aggravating problems in the police station.
The number of police personnel in the state at present is 28,000.In some of the police stations in far off places including Noney police station in Tamenglong district, the police personnel are not even issued guns and they are protecting the area with sticks in their hands, the source informed.
Police stations in different parts of the state collect their share of petrol from the government petrol pump at Ist MR complex by the respective SPs of the district.
The petrol is further distributed to other police stations from the office of the SP.
This whole process creates problems to the police personnel in getting their share.
The problem is compounded during economic blockades, the source added.
