THE NATIONAL Commission of Women (NCW) Monday took up the case of the two northeastern women who were allegedly sexually harassed by their landlord, and has issued notice to the director general of police (DGP) and the chief secretary of Haryana in this regard.
Mary and Daisy, two Manipuri girls who had rented a room in DLF Phase 1 in Gurgaon, were allegedly sexually assaulted and beaten up by their landlord along with two other men on the night of Dec 12 .
While the girls said that the police were initially hesitant to register a case of sexual assault, later the men were booked under the relevant sections of IPC for offences of molestation, sexual assault and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Worried at the trend of increasing number of cases of northeastern women who have migrated here for study or work, being harassed, Lansinglu Rongmei, advocate and a member of the Northeast Support Centre, who has been helping the girls approached the NCW.
An official of the NCW told IANS: "The commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the case of molestation of the two northeastern girls in Gurgaon and has written to the DGP and chief secretary of Haryana.
They have been asked to submit a report on the same within two weeks".
