Imphal, March 11 2011:
Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on a fast unto death agitation for more than 10 years now demanding repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act has been rearrested by the police again today.
Sharmila was arrested at about 2.14 pm today soon after President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who was here on a two-day visit to the State, left for Delhi.
A team of Imphal East Police rearrested Sharmila from the office of Sharmila Kanba Lup and took her directly to the Court of CJM Imphal East.
While being taken to the Court of the CJM, some of the women members of Sharmila Kanba Lup also accompanied her.
As in previous years, Sharmila was released from the security ward of JN Hospital where she is being kept and nose-fed on completion of one year of her detention on alleged charge of attempting to commit suicide at around 1 pm yesterday.
With Sharmila continuing her fast, the police rearrested her and kept her in the security ward of JN Hospital again after being produced before the court of CJM, Imphal East today.
The drama of release and rearrest has been an annual ritual since Sharmila began her fast demanding scrapping of the Act that gives sweeping power to the security
