Imphal, May 26 2011:
A meeting of an all political parties' representatives was held in the Chief Minister's secretariat at 4 pm, it resolved to strongly oppose the opening of a "communal political party in Manipur" .
The meeting convened under the chair of CM, O Ibobi Singh discussed the issue of the proposed launching of a unit of the Naga People's Front (NPF) at Senapati.
The meeting was attended by ministers Th Debendra, Phungzathang Tonsing, MPCC president Gaikhangam, minister P Parijat and L Iboyaima of CPI, Sarat Salam and Y Ratan of CPI (M), Radhabinod Koijam of NCP, Ch Ajang Khongsai of NPP and O Joy of MPP.
A copy of the invitation for the launching ceremony of the NPF Manipur state unit on May 28 sent by its president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu in the presence of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio of Nagaland was placed before the meeting, as per a copy of the proceedings of the meeting made available to the media houses.
The meeting studied the aims and objects of the NPF enumerated in its constitution, article II (C) of the constitution which states "To work for unity and integrity of the people by integrating all contiguous Naga inhabited areas under one administrative roof and also to provide protection to all ethnic groups who are indigenous inhabitants of the state" .
"This particular provision challenges the territorial integrity of neighbouring northeast states like Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
On this count, opening of the NPF unit in Manipur at Senapati was strongly opposed in the meeting as it would lead to instability in Manipur and spread disharmony among different communities therein," the meeting assumed.
The meeting also pointed out X (A)(1) of NPF's constitution which states that "Any citizen of Nagaland who subscribes to the principles of the Naga People's Front shall be eligible for primary membership of the party" .
As this article clearly shows that membership of NPF will extend to citizen of Nagaland and not to others.
In the circumstances the proposed launching of the NPF unit at Senapati will tantamount to extension of the territory of Nagaland into Manipur furthering the demand of Greater Nagaland, the meeting went on to observe.
At the concluding part of the meeting, it was resolved to strongly oppose the opening of a communal political party in Manipur as it would violate the peaceful co-existence of various communities.
It also decided to send a copy each of the resolution to the Prime Minister, President of AICC, Home Minister, Election Commission of India and to all the Chief Ministers of the North Eastern states.
