Imphal, February 19 2009:
With the second day of the general strike called against the brutal killing of Dr Th Kishan, a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Kasom Khullen and his two subordinate staffs basically turning violent in some parts of the Imphal city besides a series of rallies being carried out by protesters against the brutal killings, an indefinite curfew has been imposed in the greater Imphal area this evening from 5 pm until further notice.
The curfew has been imposed under Cr PC 144 section 2 .
Earlier during the day, a series of rallies were carried out in the Imphal area in protest against the brutal killing with many turning violent when security forces tried to stop the rallyists.
Bandh supporters also blocked roads by burning tyres and even burnt down a motorcycle at Khurai in Imphal East along Imphal-Ukhrul road.
During a crack down of one such rally in Tera Khuraijam Leirak in Imphal West atleast four were critically injured including three women when personnel of security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The injured have been admitted to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) .
A rally was also organised by the JAC at Nagamapal in Imphal West which called for the resignation of the Chief Minister.
Condemning the brutal killing through verbal slogans, the JAC also demanded an immediate booking of the culprits involved in the murder of the official and his staffs.
Another rally was also organised along Tiddim road at Singjamei in Imphal West.
Besides rallies, a series of sit-in-protests were also organised in the Imphal area protesting against the brutal killing of the state officials.
At Khuman Lampak Nagaram area in Imphal East along the Dingku Road, a sit-in-protest was organised by the Nagaram women folks, the youths and women of Gaipuinam and Namdulong Kabui community.
The Tangkhul women folks of the Tangkhul Avenue also organised a sit-in-protest along the Dingku Road.
All these protests while strongly condemning the brutal act in one voice, called for a clarification from the culprits and also called upon the government to book the culprits at the earliest.
Bandh supporters also gave a hard time to the media persons who were covering the development of the day for news.
The bandh supporters refused the media persons from going about and covering the news.
However, later in the evening Y.Biren, secretary of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) appealed all not to disturb the media persons in such times when they were covering the incidents for the news.
The secretary called upon all for clarification of fake journalists from the AMWJU in times of going about reporting.
Meanwhile, following a report that three dead bodies were spotted at Maphou dam area, reported to be those three other missing officials, police personnel and media team rushed to the place Thursday afternoon which only turned out to be a wild goose chase.
After receiving the reports a team of police headed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) V Jathang and Superintendent of police Imphal East district, Th.Radheshyam, rushed to the area along with a team of media persons.
However, after spot investigation and enquiring all the security post along the area, the report turned out to be rumours.
