Imphal, August 05 2009:
There were scuffles between the state security forces and Meira Paibis (women torch bearers) at many places when the women took to the streets with bamboo torches at many places in Imphal East and West districts tonight.
The Apunba Lup, a conglomerate of various civil society organisations organised torch rallies defying the curfew imposed since last night.
The rallies began at 8 pm tonight.
The scuffles started when the Manipur Police and IRB personnel tried to disperse the rallyists at Khurai, Singjamei and many other localities.
The police personnel used tear gas shells and rubber bullets to stop the torch rallies and disperse them.

Meanwhile, reports have been received from many localities in both Imphal districts where people came out on the roads defying the prohibitory orders to vent their anger and protest against the government and the police commandos.
Roads were blocked, effigies of Chief Minister, DGP and police commandos were burnt and slogans demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister were shouted by people in Khurai areas, the locality of the deceased Sanjit, who was shot dead by Manipur police commandos on July 23 .
The chief minister returned to Imphal today and drove away without meeting the media amidst tight security, disappointing reporters who had gone to the airport to get his comment.
The prohibitory orders had added to the misery of the common people who have already been suffering during the 48-hour bandh called by Apunba Lup.
People who came out early in the morning in the hope of buying some supplies were chased back home by state security forces.
The worst affected are the daily wage earners who have had to endure three days without work and earning, and their patience is almost running out.
