Imphal, October 29 2009:
Special Security Group (SSG) of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken charge of guarding and protecting the state Chief Minister's official bungalow from the CRPF.
Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (North East in-charge), Naveen Verma also arrived in Imphal today to review the internal security of the state.
A company of 96 personnel of SSG, who arrived in Imphal along with sophisticated equipments from Dimapur yesterday, took charge of protection of the Chief Minister and the official bungalow.
For the time being, their transit camp will be located at the head quarter of 2nd Bn Manipur Rifles at North AOC.
However, they will be later stationed at barracks being constructed on the campus of and near CM's bungalow.
The site where office complex of DIPR was earlier located is also being developed with construction of infrastructure for accomodation of the SSG personnel.
Another company of the same force will also be arriving here within the next few days to take charge of protecting the Raj Bhavan, a highly placed official source said.
The steps for protecting the Chief Minister's bungalow and Raj Bhavan were taken up following repeated attempts of underground rebel groups to attack the VVIPs' residence in the last few years.
The state government had requested the Centre to provide commandos of National Security Guard (NSG) to protect the Chief Minister.
Security in and around Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister's bungalow and other installations around these two locations has been tightened up following attacks from the proscribed outfits namely PREPAK and KCP (MC) since last year.
UGs launched bomb attacks at least two times at the Chief Minister's bungalow last year while an attempt to blow up Raj Bhavan was made on September 18 last.
Meanwhile, Joint Secretary, MHA, Naveen Verma arrived here today and attended meetings of the Joint Monitoring Group of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with Kuki armed outfits in the state and Strategy and Operational Group (SOG) under the command of Combined Headquarter.
