Based on request, 57 Mountain Division has succeeded in retrieving Rs 2.27 crore which was fraudulently withdrawn from the United Bank of India (UBI), Churachandpur
branch.
A statement issued by the PIB (Defence Wing) today stated that the GOC 57 Mountain Division received request for assistance in the recovery of 4.54 Crores of public fund fraudulently withdrawn between October 3 and October 14 from the Union Bank of India (UBI) Churachandpur branch and apprehending the culprits.
Accordingly, 27 Sector under 57 Mountain Division spread out its intelligence network to identify the culprits and recover the amount.
Deliberate investigations personally supervised and conducted by Brigadier Rajeev Pant resulted in identification of the culprits who were connected to a particular SoO group, it stated.
The statement added that their leadership was contacted and deliberate talks with them resulted in the group accepting to return the money and hand over the culprits in the JMG meeting held on October 29 at Imphal.
On November 2, the date agreed for part return of money, the members of the concerned group contacted the Army and confirmed that they were ready to return the money agreed as per the schedule decided in the JMG meet, it stated.
Consequently a meeting was organised at Headquarters of 27 Sector Assam Rifle on November 2. Brigadier Rajeev Pant, Commander 27 Sector Assam Rifle, Ms Jacintha Lazarus, DC Chrachandpur, Mr GB Sharma, SP Churachandpur were present in the meeting where Rupees 2.27 Crores was handed over to DC Churachandpur after physical counting.
The retrieval of the money of public fund which was meant to be used for Multi Sectoral Development Programme is a big achievement for the people of Churachandpur.
The exemplary role played by 57 Mountain Division in the complete episode highlights the commitment of the Army towards maintaining peace, harmony and normalcy in the State, the PIB (DW) statement added.
The civil administration was highly appreciative of the efforts and commitment of the Army.
The group has also promised to refund the balance money and handover the culprits involved, it further stated.
