Shillong, March 24 2010:
Director General Assam Rifles KS Yadava said that withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Manipur will hamper their method of functioning.
He was speaking on the sideline of the 175th Raising Day of the Assam Rifles here on Wednesday.
The DGAR even warned that repealing or withdrawal of AFSPA would hinder the style of functioning of the armed forces in the region, claiming that the Act gives immunity to the armed forces in the disturbed areas of the region.
"The withdrawal of AFSPA from Manipur is a matter which both the state government and the Central government should decide," Yadava said.
The controversial AFSPA has evoked sharp response from many of the right groups of the region.
The Act gives sweeping powers to the forces while on counter insurgency operations.
In recent times various organisations in the region especially Manipur are calling for the repealing of the act.
They alleged that the armed forces are taking advantage of the act and are indulging in human rights violation.
The army and the para-military forces like the Assam Rifles are involved in fighting various under ground outfits in Manipur.
