An awareness programme on organic farming was organised by the State Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation under the National Project on Organic Farming at Tangkhul Theological Association premises at Hamleikhong in Ukhrul district yesterday.
Former Horticulture Director B Haridas and horticulturist S Sanjoy spoke in the awareness programme as resource persons.
Project in-charge KD Sharma also elaborated on how to undertake organic farming in hill areas.
He appealed to the farmers of hill districts not to use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on large scale.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr L Nabachandra of the Department of Agronomy, CAU explained the harmful effects of consuming foods grown with fertilizers and pesticides, particularly on children and infants.
He exhorted the farmers to take up organic farming.
At the end of the programme, the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation distributed sprayers to 40 beneficiaries.
