Imphal, October 09: Former member of Manipur Human Rights Commission and former correspondent of The Statesman, Yambem Laba has been appointed as the new Director of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), Imphal today.

This followed a communique received to this effect from Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.

The post of the Director had fallen vacant subsequent to the resignation of the earlier incumbent since July 2005.Laba is also the founder president of Imphal Chapter of SPIC-MACAY and beginning from 1985 was instrumental in bringing stalwartslike Bharat Ratna Pundit Ravi Shankar, Padmabibhusan Sonal Mansingh, Hari Prasad Chourasia, Pundit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Swapna Sundari, L Subramanium and Sayukta Panigrahi to come to Imphal and perform free of students and youths.

Besides, Laba was also the chief-coordinator and State designer for the 2nd Bhagyachandra National Festival of Classical Dances in 1993.
