Imphal, January 27 2009:
The Tribal Chiefs' Association of Jiribam has come out strongly against what it described as the insensible act of the Government of Manipur in acting against the wishes of the Tribal populace of Jiribam Sub-division, Imphal East district, reports our Jiribam correspondent.
Chairman of the Association L Thanmawi Pazamte rued that the Government has been hell bent on setting up a rehabilitation centre (camp) for the surrendered UGs in Muongbung and Moljol areas of Jiribam which will displace hundreds of villagers from their homestead.
The Association had already submitted memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Governor in this regard.
Inspite of that, the tribal chief lamented that the Government has went ahead with setting up of the unwanted rehabilitation centre with deployment of Manipur Rifles and Police personnel.
He complained that the security forces being deployed at the work site are also preventing the villagers from venturing out to engage in cultivation works in their own land.
The tribal chief also announced that intense agitations would be launched if the Government does not review its decision of setting up the rehabilitation centre.
