The Arunachal Citizens Right and CORE, manipur applauded members of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly for upholding a Private Member's resolution to withdraw the Disturbed Area status from the State.
Informing that the private member resolution was moved by MLA Wanglin Lowangdong for withdrawal of the Disturbed Areas notification under the AFSPA 1958, the rights bodies in a joint statement described the Arunachal Pradesh assembly's decision as historic example for the rest of the democratic country of India in restoring true democracy to the people.
AFSPA is being enforced in Arunachal Pradesh since September 17, 1991 and periodically reviewed by the Centre with the consent of the State Government, the statement informed.
Appreciation the Gegong apang-led Government in Arunachal pradesh, the human rights advocates further reminded to all concerned that AFSPA contravenes international human rights law and continued imposition of such Act tantamount to systematic violation of indigenous peoples' rights.
The amendment to the Act in 1972 has been effectively encroaching upon the internal affairs of the State, and supersedes the sovereign and plenary powers of the State Government in the governance of its internal affairs such law and order, and public order, the statement pointed out.
