World renowned theatre director Ratan Thiyam was today appointed the Vice Chairman of the National Sangeet Natak Akademi for a term of five years.
His selection was made today by the Governing Council of the Akademi chaired by its Chairman Ram Niwas Mirdha.
The former director of National School of Drama, New Delhi, Ratan Thiyam received the international fame for his play CHAKRAVYUH in 1984 when the production bagged the prestigious First Fringe Award in Edinburgh Theatre Festival.
His productions had been staged in all parts of the globe.
He was recognized as most traveled theatre director of the world.
Earlier, Ratan Thiyam was a member of the Executive Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi three times.
Talking about his new assignment, Thiyam said here today that he would like to find out the problems of the artists who were in the different fields of art in the country.
He would like to search about the different art forms in every nook and corner of the country and make endeavour for reviving of dying art forms like Khongjom Parva , Pena etc as example in Manipur.
As there was a Regional Centre of Sangeet Natak Akademi for North East states, Ratan Thiyam desired to interact al the artistes of the region to find out their problems.
Ratan Thiyam is currently taking up two productions- namely King of Dark Chamber written by Viswakavi Rabindranath Tagore and a Greek Play- Prometheus Bound written by Aeschylus.
