Imphal, December 10 2011:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) and Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) jointly organised an education campaign on the impact of intoxicants to the students community at Jovial Ellona English School, Irom Meijrao today.
Giving keynote address, CADA general secretary N Doren said, the objective of organising the programme was to discuss the future of the youths of the State and sketch a plan to save them from the ill effects of different intoxicants.
Informing that Manipur is one of the States where HIV/AIDS prevalence is high, Doren said that more than 38,000 people are living with the infection, out of which 10,000 are women and 2000 are children.
It is natural that youths are always tempted to test new things, however, such instincts usher them to darkness, Doren said.
In order to save the youths of the State from such a disaster, awareness programmes must be organised to educate them, he added.
Saying that Spasmo Proxibon (SP) capsules are often used as intoxicants by youths including school going girls, Doren stressed on the need to conduct discussion sessions among teachers, students, general public and different organisations to curb the menace.
MNP+ programme manager Ng Ratan while speaking at the programme said, drug abuse would lead the future of young generation to darkness.
Saying that dendrite, ink remover and SP capsules are often abused, Ratan opined that the society must instill the sense of avoiding such bad habits into the minds of people of younger generation.
Giving his opinion of controlling use of intoxicants from grassroot level, AMSU secretary general Dipanjit observed that teachers must also avoid using of tobacco inside school/college campus.
He also suggested to constitute teachers' committee to control abuse of intoxicants inside school/college campus.
CADA assistant secretary general Nepram ongbi Bimola, Jovial Bellona English School Principal Lourembam Shanta Singh, Model English School Principal Ng Dhananjoy Singh and Irom Meijrao High School Headmistress Chingtham Pramodini spoke in the programme as resource persons.
