Expressing serious concern over the climatic changes witnessing all over the world today due to depleting of forest resources, Forest and Environmental Minister Th Debendra has called for adopting an approach based on scientific management to conserve the forest resources.
Speaking as chief guest of the platinum jubilee celebration of establishment of Forest Department in Manipur held at the Sanjenthong head office of the Dept today, Debendra pointed out that human life is under threat today following rampant destruction of forest resources the world over.
'However, despite the threat, most of the people are yet to come to term with the possible crisis and continue to cut down trees', he lamented, adding that it is here that the Forest Department has to play an important role in spreading awareness among the people.
Stressing on the need for scientific management to conserve the forest resources, the Minister said many developed countries of the world have awaken to the need of the time and taking up the issue of conservation of forest resources at International platform.
At this critical juncture, there is the need for the State Forest Department to adopt new and effective method of conserving the forest resources after doing away with its earlier method, he said.
The Minister also released a souvenir, titled Umang (Forest) to mark the occasion, apart from felicitating employees of the Dept who have retired from service with gifts and presents.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Seiboi Singsit presided over the function attended by former PCCFs BSK Sharma, IFS and Sh Tomchou, IFS as guests of honour.
