Imphal, March 31 2009: President Pratibha Patil has felicitated Gurumayum Gourakishor Sharma with the prestigious Padmashree award for the year 2008-09 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan at New Delhi today morning.

Gourakishor was conferred the award in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the field of Manipuri Thanga-Ta art.

Gourakishor attended the function in full Manipuri traditional dress wearing Khamen Chatpa-Phaijom.

He is the first person to be conferred with the Padmashree award in traditional Manipur martial art form of Thang-Ta.

Notably, he was also the first person to receive the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award from Manipur in 1983 .
