Imphal, October 03:
The Threatened Indigenous Peoples' Society (TIPS) Manipur has strongly condemned the act of torturing innocent civilians by troops of 21 Assam Rifles in the aftermath of the ambush undertaken by a banned armed organisation in the intervening night of September 30 and October 1 at Umathel, conveyed a TIPS release.
Noting that such excesses of security forces is nothing new in Manipur, the TIPS observed that rather than working for a permanent solution to the problem of insurgency, New Delhi has been treating the problem as mere law and order issue.
Such attitude of the Union Government has been abetting gross violation of human rights and rampant killing of civilians.
Nevertheless, TIPS appealed to both the State agents and non-State actors to respect human rights and values and to abide by the international humanitarian laws.
