In a tragic accident, five passengers of a Tata Sumo including a woman were killed today while six others sustained injuries.
The accident took place near Irang bridge along Imphal-Jiribam road at about 9.30 am.
The passengers were killed when the vehicle lost control and fell into a deep gorge.
According to information received from a police source, the deceased victims are identified as Chandam ongbi Tamphasana of Khurai Thongam Leikai, District Fishery Officer Y Biren, Principal of Jiri College Ajit, Dr Anwar and one Chaoba.
The injured victims who are currently undergoing treatment at RIMS are Louriyam Lokeshwari (28) w/o Tomba of Shamushang, Md Ashraf (50) of Haoreibi Makha Leikai and Md Ijaya of Jiri.
Those undergoing treatment at JN Hospital include a child named Chandam Shankar.
He is the son of Tamphasana who died in the mishap.
As the ill-fated vehicle went down the gorge, troops of 11 Assam Rifles who were passing by immediately sprung into action and launched a rescue operation.
On reaching the vehicle, the troops found that four passengers had died on the spot.
They immediately evacuated the other passengers to the nearest post of 16 AR at Noney where they were given first aid, informed a PIB (DW) release.
After administering first aid, the injured victims were rushed to RIMS by 15 AR personnel but one seriously injured victim succumbed enroute to Imphal increasing the death toll to five.
But for the immediate action of the troops of 11 AR, the number of fatal casualties would have been much higher, it added.
