Imphal, August 18 2014:
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has assured all necessary assistance for preservation of Sangai, found in the floating sanctuary of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) and also for development of the park.
The WWF gave this assurance during a meeting held at New Delhi last month under the initiative of former Union Forest and Environment Secretary MK Ranjit Sinha, informed an official source.
Notably, MK Ranjit Sinha was a member of the team who first conducted an aerial survey of Sangais found in KLNP way back in 1975 .
The meeting was also participated by officials of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, State Forest Department, LDA, environmentalists and representatives of the Wildlife Institute of India.
In the course of the meeting, WWF officials assured that WWF would provide full cooperation in the efforts to preserve and protect Sangais as well as KLNP.
Moreover, WWF would invite other organisations/companies to invest in Manipur for preservation of Sangai and development of KLNP.
The deteriorating conditions of the park such as pollution of water, decreasing thickness of floating masses as well as the proposal to install CCTV cameras around the park were deliberated at the meeting.
Another agenda of the meeting was inviting corporate houses to invest in preservation of Sangai.
According to the wildlife census conducted last year, there were 204 Sangais at KLNP.
