The State Cabinet has given its approval in principle to the proposal for setting up Higher Education Commission of the State at its sitting on December 29 last, an official source informed.
The source further informed that the officials concerned have also been directed to prepare a report on the composition and the terms of reference of the commission to be tabled for discussion in the next Cabinet seating.
The terms and references will take into account the demands of the aided and private colleges for converting them into full-fledged Government institutions.
Besides, formulation of an effective academic calendar, recognition of education and other related fields as essential services, constitution of Manipur Education Service and a separate policy for the pan time lecturers is some of the other points to be given special importance, the source said.
Meanwhile, a reliable source disclosed that MoS (Ind) for Higher and Technical Education Dr T Meinya would be leaving for New Delhi on January 10 to hold consultation with the officials of the UGC, NEIPA and AITC.
