Rally foiled

Police today foiled a bid to stage a rally by differently abled persons pressing various demands to the Government.
However, they were allowed to submit a memoran- dum to the Chief Minister.
Although, the differently abled persons tried to start their rally from Major Khul, police prevented them from proceeding further from there.
Disabled Development Association Manipur secretary Yunus Khan said that differently abled persons of other States have got all the rights entitled to them with proper implementation of Persons with Disabilities Act 1995 .
However, disabled persons of the State are yet to enjoy these benefits, Yunus Khan said and added that they are yet to get the rights of free higher education and health insurance.

He further said that disabled persons are yet to enjoy the full quota of 3 per cent reservation in Government jobs.
Moreover, there is no separate reservation for differently abled persons who have excelled in the field of sports, he added.
The memorandum which was submitted to the Chief Minister mainly demanded free medical treatment, special health insurance scheme and stringent punishment to those who sexually abuse differently abled women.
The memorandum also urged the Government to take up necessary steps to reserve seats for differently abled persons in public and private sector institutes by the end of this year.
Yunus Khan cautioned that different forms of agitation would be launched if these demands are not fulfilled.
