CorCom urges women to raise their voices

Imphal, December 10 2011: Giving revolutionary salutes to the women of the state, the Coordination Committee of seven UG groups (KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, UNLF and UPPK) in a press statement urged the women in the state to raise their voices for a better Manipur.

CorCom stated that women have contributed immeasurably in the evolution of Manipuri society and have been in the forefront of many issues which threatened the society.

Women of Manipur, have not only taken care of the needs of the family but have also played a significant role in the economic and political spheres.

They guided the society's evolution and saved it from going astray since time immemorial.

In 1904, Manipuri women revolted against the British government who tried to force the menfolk to bring in teaks from Kabaw Valley and build their bungalows.

Again in 1939, when the world was facing a great economic depression, the then British officials exported paddy from the state.

As Manipur faced acute shortage of food grains due to this secret export, the women revolted against the British government demanding adequate food grains and put a stop to the export.

In that movement, many women became victims of the attrocities of the then British government.

After Manipur was "forcefully annexed into the Indian Union", the women of the state launched Nisa Bandh in the year 1975 when the youth of the state started drowning in the sea of liquor and intoxicants.

And in 1980, women's movement took the form of Meira Paibi with the aim to defend the human rights for the people of the state, when central security forces began to violate the human rights of the people .in the name of counter insurgency.

Since 2000, Irom Chanu Sharmila has been on a fast against the draconian act AFSPA 1958 who violates all the fundamental rights of a human being in the state.

The rich traditions, social values, religion, culture and costumes of the Manipuris are facing a constant threat from the secret agenda of the India government which is trying to annihilate the Manipuris.

When Corruption, social unrest, child trafficking, blockades, drug trafficking, HIV/AIDS, communal ill feelings and domestic violence are threatening the Manipuri society, the women community of the state should come forward and take the society to a better future, the statement urged.
