KVK Chandel gets new administrative building

Chandel, August 04, 2012: A newly constructed administrative building of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Chandel was inaugurated today at Monsang Pantha village of Chandel Districtict with MLA Nunghlung Victor and Dr A K Singh, Deputy Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi as Chief Guest and President respectively.

Dr S V Ngachan, Director of ICAR Research Complex for NE Region, Umiam Meghalaya and Dr M Premjit, Director of Extension, CAU, Imphal also attended the function as Guests of Honour.

Dr A K Singh, DDG (NRM), ICAR unveiled the inaugural stone.

An exhibition organized by ICAR was also inaugurated by MLA Nunghlung Victor at the occasion.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Chandel, Churachandpur, Imphal West, Tamenglong and Ukhrul), Horticulture Mission (MM I) of ICAR and different SHGs and NGOs collaborating with KVK, Chandel displayed their technology and exhibits.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Nunghlung Victor stressed on the need for alternative agriculture arrangements for farmers in the drought hit areas in the Districtict since the truant monsoon rain has failed them in rice cultivation.

The MLA congratulated ICAR and KVK team and said that collaboration with ICAR will definitely help the farmers to overcome the drought like situation in the Districtict.

Farmers, on the other hand, instead of waiting for the monsoon rain and remaining depressed over the failure of cultivation, should start to think of other ways and crops which can be planted successfully without much water, he added.

Dr M Premjit emphasized on resource mapping, mobile agri-clinic, post harvest management, water harvesting and crop diversification through Integrated Farming System.

Dr S V Ngachan, Director of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Meghalaya elaborated on the journey of KVK, Chandel since its foundation and explained the importance of crop diversification through maize and pulses crop.

He also emphasized on the need of convergence of different KVKs and State Departments to combat climate change.

In the Presidential address, Dr A K Singh highlighted the importance of technology intervention particularly in the field of forage cultivation, water harvesting, Integrated Farming System, farm mechanization and Natural Resource Management.

He also suggested that KVK staff should devote 25% of their time to prioritize the farmers' problem at the grassroots level.

Seeds of different crops were also Districtibuted to the farmers at the occasion.
