Railway police personnel on Monday (August 3) lathicharged a stone-pelting mob, which damaged stationary rakes and counters, after a woman passenger was caught travelling in a local train without ticket at the Sealdah main station, Kolkata.
Lathi-wielding per-sonnel of Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force cane charged the mob as it kept pelting stones damaging the window-panes of rakes and enquiry and booking counters to protest the alleged ill-treatment of the woman passenger.
An Eastern Railway spokesman said the woman, who was coming from Ranaghat in Nadia district, created a ruckus by taking off her saree after being caught by a woman ticket collector at Sealdah station for travelling without ticket.
In a bid to draw sympathy of the public, the woman started shouting alleging that the woman ticket collector had misbehaved with her and snatched from her Rs 40.With the woman refusing to hear the repeated pleas of all the on-duty woman ticket collectors and RPF constables to wear her saree, a section of the crowd got agitated and started pelting stones towards some stationary EMU rakes besides the enquiry and the booking counters.
The GRP and RPF personnel then intervened and resorted to lathi-charge.
