Imphal, March 21 2010:
A joint effort involving personnel of the Assam Rifles, Litan police station, Narcotics Control Bureau (Imphal regional Unit) and volunteers of All manipur Anti Drug Association to destroy poppy plants at an interior Ukhrul district area failed to reap the desired result as cultivators had already extracted the sap before arrival of the anti-drug campaigners.
Situated about 10 kilometres from Litan police station, the joint team tracked the hilly terrain and reached a poppy cultivation site of about 2000 acres.

However, the team accompanied by mediapersons discovered that almost the entire poppy seeds have been extracted with only the plants left standing.
Significantly an adjoining field of about the same size was cleared of wild growths through hacking and burning process, apparently for more poppy plantations.
Interacting with the mediapersons, Intelligence Officer of NCB Imphal Unit RK Ibungosana said the campaign launched today under 'Operation Armstrong-II' did not yield the expected result owing to slight delay.
He observed that in case the operation was undertaken either in January or February, the purpose of the campaign would have been fruitful.
Ibungosana also affirmed that plans would be worked out to conduct such drives for maximum impact.
The drive was supposed to be a two-day campaign but cut short as the plants were already harvested.
However, the joint team destroyed some poppy plants at a fresh field.
