Imphal, September 09:
The All Tribal Students Union, Manipur (ATSUM) has decried the apathetic attitude of the Government towards the development of tribal people, specially the student community and said that the Government never seems to act unless confronted by bandh, strike ad blockade.
In a statement, information and publicity secretary of ATSUM Joseph R Hmar recalled that the Government had on August 19 promised to resolve all the issues within a week.
But three weeks have already gone by without any positive response and the number of meetings held and the extensive documentations and survey reports submitted on the existing condition of the schools in the interior hill areas for speedy execution of the works has come to naught.
Even the deadlines set by the student body have lapsed the Govt has not done anything, he rued.
The attitude of the Government to the genuine demands has convinced ATSUM that the Government is intentionally suppressing the intellectual growth and development of human resources of the tribal students in the State, the student body charged, while asserting that the schools in the valley area are jampacked with teachers, infrastructures and opportunities while there is nothing worth its name in the schools of hill districts.
In view of the continued indifferent attitude of the Government, ATSUM will no longer call for agitations nor engage with the Government for talks on the issue.
Instead, it would try and find ways to give better education to the tribal students from beyond the State, the student body said, adding that this process will start immediately in consultation with all hill student bodies, civil societies and intelligentsia.
The process would be in the form of seminars, conclaves, consultation, etc to have wide understanding and mandates, and the first of such meeting will take place in Ukhrul as CAUCUS, 2007 on September 21 and 22, ATSUM informed.
