Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), a programme to provide all weather connectivity to every village of over 1000 population in normal areas and 500 in hilly and tribal areas by the end of 2008-09 as a part of 'Bharat Nirman' has crossed a major mile stone by completing construction of over one lakh kilometre of rural roads and providing connectivity to 30,000 habitations.
Sources from the Ministry of Rural Development said India has targeted 1,46,185 km of new connectivity and upgradation of 1,94,132 km of roads for 66,802 habitations under the four-year business plan of Bharat Nirman (2005-09).Under the programme, 1,744 km new roads will be connected to 181 habitations in Manipur by 2009.During the year 2005-06, construction of 111 km of new roads and upgradation of 171.6 km of roads in Manipur were completed.
During the current year 2006-07, Manipur has targeted to construct 460.71 km of new connectivity to covered 48 habitations.
Till October 2006, Manipur achieved construction of 5.51 km of new connectivity and the upgradation of 24.3 km of roads during the current year, the source added.
