Imphal, January 29, 2011:
The Manipur People Party today criticized Secular Progressive Front government in the state of neglecting student community by not trying to bring an end to the ongoing strike of the teachers.
The prolonged strike of the teachers under the Council of Teachers' Association (COTA) has severely hit academy atmosphere of students.
Neglecting teachers is same as neglecting students, MPP vice president who is looking after the charge of president told reporters at a press conference held at the party office today.
He alleged that SPF government is remaining silent even though teachers are on fast-unto-death seeking in toto implementation of the revised pay bands based on the recommendation of the 6th Pay Commission.
The strike will give a great impact to the students as their annual exams are knocking at the door.
Government is not taking seriously the teachers' strike.
MPP strongly condemned it, he said.
Government is shouting for quality education only through media and not doing any work to achieve this end.
This has been shown by the fact that government is not taking seriously to the teachers' strike, Mangi went on to lament.
Rights to Education Act have been enforced in the state too.
But so far no long term policy is framed to ensure delivery of the rights to the students.
MPP will bring up the matter to the knowledge of the Union Minister of Human Resource and state Governor and insist them to intervene in end teacher's stir, he said.
On the ongoing drive against illegal and default electricity consumers, Mangi said that the party assumes the drive like treating a patient without proper diagnosing the disease first.
Authorities are seen to forget that consumers are not clearing their due electric bills due to irregular power supply, corrupt practices of the department's field staff in collusion with the section officers.
How the power department which is not taking its own responsible will able to conduct its drive against defaulters.
The department is not repairing or replacing when problems developed in a transformer as its own responsible and consumers use to collect money themselves to refill oil of the transformer from time to time could check, he observed.
The ongoing drive is nothing but to harass the poor consumers.
It has also given a great impact to the students preparing for exams as their family could not afford kerosene which cost Rs 80 a litre and students are unable to manage their study with candle sticks, he added.
The party also trying to extract information regarding due power bills with government department, officers, ministers and MLAs from the power department through RTI, he said adding that an application seeking the information has been submitted to the chief engineer.
