ADC polls : UNC says agitation on card

Senapati, April 19 2015 : In the backdrop of the fast approaching ADC election, the United Naga Council (UNC) has spelt out that in continuation of its demand for expediting the Indo-Naga peace process for an honorable solution, an agitation would be launched soon.

Any announcement in this regard would be made within the next five/six days , stated UNC president Gaidon Kamei.

It has also been hinted that the present ADC members or those who have resigned are mostly Congress candidates and they may face stiff opposition for defying the Naga People's Convention (NPC) declaration made in July 2010 in the aftermath of the infamous Mao-gate firing incident in which two young students lost their lives at the hands of Manipur police commandos.

Those who are against the people should be banned from taking any social or political responsibilities in the future too, he asserted.

The UNC president said, "there will be no chance for the present ADC members who had defied people's decision made during the 2010 Naga People's Convention (NPC) at Senapati DHQs, where it was declared that the 2010 ADC election was null and void, to get elected again" .

He also added that those political parties or groups which are against the wishes or decision of the people will not be allowed to participate in the said election.

Gaidon warned that the ADC election cannot fool the people and that UNC will continue to uphold its 2010 NPC decision and abstain from participating in the ADC election.

Any decision to boycott or join the electoral process will depend on the wishes of the public and not UNC alone.

Maintaining that the people's voice is supreme and ultimate in any decision making process, the UNC stated that it will endorse those political parties or groups in principle which share common agenda with the UNC.

It is not against any party but working against the people or defying the decision would only invite serious repercussion, it warned.

It may be noted that on April 17, the UNC held a meeting to review the present situation.

Sources have informed that the meeting also discussed the ADC election.

With reports of a Naga armed group already issuing verbal order to its cadres to ban all present ADC members from re-contesting the upcoming 2015 ADC election, there is serious apprehension of a political impact against the Congress Government and its ADC members.

Moreover, the emergence of BJP and NPF in the present ADC election as strong contenders has sidelined the Congress party in some areas of the hill districts of Manipur.

With political campaigns heating up in many parts of the hill districts, majority of the intending candidates have opted for either BJP or NPF while some others have decided to contest the election as independent candidates.

Sources in Congress party have however denied such reports but maintained that many of the present ADC members will contest on Congress tickets and it is the people who will decide and not otherwise.
