We could realize the economic conditions of Manipur when we read this book. Since long back Manipur has peen depending upon agriculture. We should understand that prolonged dependence upon agriculture is a sign of primitive economy, observed the author. Out of the States domestic product 40 pc is agricultural products. The number of the unemployed out of the total population of Manipur was 52 pc in 1951 which was reducing to 40.35 pc in 1981 census. The total population in 1991 was 18,37,714 out of which 7, 08, 283 were employed and 11,29,439 were unemployed. The number of marginal worker, in 1981 was 40,469 which was increasing upto 66,621 in 1991. This has substantiated that the line of poverty was increased at the rate of 64.62 pc. The number of agricultural laborers too has been increased form 0.26% to 9.28 pc during the period 1951-1991. The author suggests some remedies to remove the unemployment problem in Manipur. There are thousands of trained technical personnel in Manipur who are still unemployed, why? To employ them by changing the structure of economy is a must. The author suggests, 'Please work out a new public policy for self employment'. The rate of giving employment by transport sector is 5.19 pc per annum. This is a very good sign of the economy. Remove distortions and artificial hurdles in the interstate movement, suggested the author. The economic condition of Manipur is too bad so that Manipur is running into debt. The amount of money taken from the Central Govt. as loan and advance was 292 crore in 1998. We the Manipuris are all in debt. |
