A collection of Manipuri proverbs by Ch. Babuton Singha, published by the author on behalf of Naharol Khorjei Thougallup in 2000 AD, Price Rs 55/-, page 149. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
The book features one thousand two hundred twenty-six proverbs. It would be very useful to the students and the lovers of Manipuri language and literature. The proverbs in this book are descended from our ancestors in the form of oral literature. The author polished the old forms and brought out in the written form. The proceeding of the collection of these proverbs takes seven or eight years, mentioned the author in the preface of the book. Most of the proverbs are highly literary and thought provoking. On the conduct of collecting the proverbs, the proverbs the author had consulted the elders among others his mother Chongtham Ongbi Amubi, Heigrujam Indramani, K. Chandrasekhar, Laishram Phanindra, Laishram Manglemba, Laishram Kusumlei, Chongtham Girishbabu etc. There are printing mistakes galore in the book. These should be corrected in the next edition, I hope. Proverbs like the crying baby drinks milk, fruits are sweet though bitter 10 the patients, honey on the lips and poison in the belly are very significant. Every language has its own proverbs. The Manipuri proverbs written in this book have their own charms with a different taste. It would be praiseworthy to bring out such a rare book.
