Inaugural Session
The workshop on Fundamentals of Digital Filmmaking and Cinematography organized by EMRC, Manipur University commenced today at the Edusat hall of EMRC. Mr. Bharat Nerkar (resource person) faculty of FTII, Mr. H. Kanhailal, Padma Shri and Dr. N. Premchand, Director, EMRC, MU were the Guest of Honour, Chief Guest and President of the function respectively. Mr. Ksh. Tejkeshwar Singh, Coordinator of the workshop welcomed the dignitaries, invitees and participants.
Mr. Bharat Nerkar was of the view that space and time is very important in filmmaking and those who can manipulate these two can become a good filmmaker. He also highlighted the importance of visualization in filmmaking.
Mr. H. Kanhailal, believed that theatre is more of a play by active actors in front of an active audiences and their perception or sense is very significant. He added that as long as there will be human, there will be art.
Dr N. Premchand expressed that drama and theatre are very relevant in today’s electronic media domain and drama has been proliferated to other art forms such as film making and acting.
The inaugural session was followed by a tea break.
The first session started with self introduction of the participants. The participants spoke about their backgrounds and expectations from the workshop. In his conversation with the participants Mr. Nerkar expressed that one could learn faster in the art of cinematography if one is able to visualise through the viewfinder of the camera.
After the introductory session, Mr. Nerkar started with a presentation on “Emerging Trends in Digital Technology and the Changing Film Production Methodology”. He explained about the Traditional Film Making Process and its history. He also explained about the emergence of television in the 50s which brought a revolution with the advent of handy, portable battery operated cameras and user friendly editing tools. He continued his lecture on the present trends in digital filmmaking, its future and the production methodology.
The afternoon session started with presentations on ‘Role of Visuals in Television’ and ‘Art and Craft of Creating Visuals’. In this regard he emphasised on the following points:
i) Art of photography is the art of ‘seeing’; the basic most important role of visuals in any production is to communicate certain visual information about facts or fiction.
ii) Selection of the object of interest, its placement in the given cinematic space, selection of camera placement and selection of the lens.
iii) Selective manipulation of the cinematic space by camera movement, balancing of the compositional space during static and moving camera positions.
iv) Selective use of ‘light’ as the most important element of visual design to create depth perspective or mood and right atmosphere to tell the story.
After his presentation, the resource person showed two short documentaries entitle “The Zoo” and “ Glass”.
The evening session concluded with the division of the participants into four groups.
