Knowledge Workshop for Music Creators and Independent Artists in Dimapur

The Indian Performing Right Society Limited (IPRS), the government-authorized music copyright society representing over 10,000 authors, composers, and music publishers as its members, is now reaching out to the budding music creators and independent artists in the northeast city of Dimapur in Nagaland. Through its outreach programme and knowledge workshop, IPRS will inform and educate songwriters, composers, and music makers from the region about music copyright and how to manage their rights as creators to garner the rightful revenues from their creations.

The session will highlight the various aspects of music rights, the function of copyright societies in managing the creator's rights, and help the audience understand music royalty and its sources. The workshop will be held on 24th February 2023, at 12 noon at Hotel Lake Shiloi, Dimapur Nagaland.

Commenting on the workshop IPRS CEO Mr. Rakesh Nigam, said, “Music is in the air in the northeast states of India, with a vast pool of incredible talent. We are thrilled to be in Dimapur to meet the music creators and independent artists from the state and surrounding regions to educate them on various aspects of the music industry beyond creation, related to Music Copyright, Royalties, and Managing Creator's Rights. This is an extension of the IPRS’s knowledge programme ‘Learn & Earn’, reaching out to music makers across the country.”

The Indian music industry is flourishing, with new and varied musical compositions emerging from different regions. Non-film and regional music are gaining prominence on a global scale. And with the growth of digital platforms and readily available technology, an increasing number of music creators are taking the plunge and successfully creating their audience and fan base.

This budding community of music creators contributes a distinct voice and viewpoint to the industry, broadening and enriching the music landscape. The rise of independent artists and songwriters in recent times reflects the incredible talent and the enormous potential this pool holds. However, with this growth comes the need to support, educate, and protect the creator's rights.

As a copyright society representing the community of music creators, IPRS has thus been relentlessly working towards educating those behind the music on matters related to the rights of creators and lending a voice to spread awareness on fair pay and fair play of music.

The workshop will feature presentations and discussions on topics such as copyright in music, how to manage rights and earn royalties, and the role and relevance of music copyright societies like IPRS in today’s burgeoning music industry.
