A New-Delhi based NGO, Shristi, organised a work on women empowerment at Thoubal from April 21 to May 5. Women were trained to make crafts with 'kauna' plant. The participants included women from economically weaker sections of society. With the skills they acquired in the workshop, they will be able to market their handicrafts products and become economically independent, apart from highlighting the full potential of the 'kauna' plant.
At least 20 women from OBC, SC and minority communities and with a background in 'kauna craft' participated in the workshop.

They were taught how to make not just another handicrafts item but a durable, marketable one. With a little ingenuity, products of aesthetic value and contemporary design can be made, such as dustbins, baskets, vases, cushions, footwear and bags.
The workshop was sponsored by Delhi-based National Research Development Corporation.
Founded in 1998, Shristi works with the underprivileged by helping them use new technology to upgrade their skills and sell their produce to a wider market.
