While there are voices of panic raised hue and cry from the parents, intellects and academics on the migration of Manipuri students to other States, it will be a matter of rejoicing to know that students do come and stay in Manipur to study from other parts of India and even from Capital Delhi where there are so many educational institutions. For medical, agricultural and technology streams students from North East States come to Manipur through the reserve quota of their respective States to study here in Regional Institute of Medical science (RIMS), Central Agricultural University (CAU) and Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT) etc. But one cannot imagine students coming from other States to pursue their future study in Arts and Science streams after passing the High School Leaving Examinations. Reader may not believe it but it is true that students as far as from Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Benaras and Orissa come to Manipur to study in a Girls' Higher Secondary School in the heart of Imphal. Yes, I am talking about the Tamphasana Girls from other States reading here in Science and Arts stream. Why does they come here? In reply to this question they affirmed that the hospitable climate of Manipur, the cheap admission fees, the reputation of the school and above all the colour of pink rose dress that is the symbol of this girls' higher secondary school attracted them most and they came here to study and have no remorse to leave their homestate for this school. Before the growth of private schools, toppers in the HSLC and HSSLC examinations belong to the Govt High and Higher Secondary Schools. In every examination fierce competitions were there among the reputed Govt high and higher secondary schools. As the newly established private schools owned by private individuals and management committees lured away many meritorious students, it becomes a hard battle to fight for the Government schools to produce top position holders in every examination year after year. As a result of this, after every declaration of examination result conducted by BSEM and CHSE many accusing fingers are raised over the performance of these Government schools. But in the midst of these heaps of wraths and among the ruins of the Govt schools, TG Girls' Higher Secondary School stands above head and shoulders of the Government school and are still in the race for supremacy even though there is stiff competition from private institutions on its performance. For the last many years, this premiere higher secondary school has produced top position holders in the HSSLC examination. Last year it had swept away all the ten position in Arts stream except the second position. In that examination, a record pass percentage of more than ninety percent was achieved in the science stream. This year four students have got their names among the 10 toppers in three different streams. In Science, out of 212 students appeared 71 passed in first division, 104 in second division with pass percentage of 89%. Arts: 125 students appeared, First division 37 second division 61, 3rd division 18 with a pass percentage of 92%. In Commerce 25 students cleared the examination out of 46 and in vocational subjects 7 passed out of 12 appeared. Twenty-six students both from Science and Arts stream have got letter marks in either one or two subjects with a girl securing highest mark in Biology. The newly promoted Principal of this School, S Damayanti Devi was in an up-beat and cheerful mood when this writer talked to her about the performances and result of this school. Here is the excerpts of the talks. Q. How do you feel in the result of the examination? Is it beyond or within your expectation? SD: It is a mixture of both. We hope for top position in Arts stream but this year we fail to retain that position but can manage the 3rd and the 7th position, at the same time one student of Science stream has got her name in the top 10 which we can't achieve for the last 4/5 years. Altogether 4 students get among the toppers in three different streams. It is an achievement itself. Q. What is your assessment about the performances of your students in the coming years? SD: It is as certain as this (thumping her fist on the table) that in the HSSLC examination of 2007 our students will top in atleast 3 streams. For this preparations have already been made, extra class will be held in the coming session. Parents and guardians co-operation will be sought and with a bit of luck we are sure of our target. Q. About the infrastructure of the School? SD: A lot of facilities are made available in this school. There is a big two-storeyed building ready to be used from this academic session. Science Laboratory rooms have been enlarged. A new library building has also been completed. But there is still a lot to be done to make this school a model school. Computers are installed in the school without a qualified computer teacher. Vacant posts due to the transfer on promotions of lecturer need to be filled up before the commencement of regular classes. Above this drainage system in and around the school camps need to be improved. This writer has spend some moments in the midst of position holders of the HSSLC 2006. S Haripriya Devi, the 9th position holder in Science stream wants to become a Doctor and she is preparing for the Medical entrance examination. Jyotsana Lourembam the 3rd position holder in Arts stream aims to become a professor and she will continue her studies in Manipur because in her opinion all the facilities, even the help of good teachers are available in Manipur. Phaomei Promela the 7th position in Arts and Ibemcha Keisham the 3rd in Vocational stream want to go to outside Manipur for further studies because of the present low and order situation in Manipur. The Tamphasana Girls' Secondary school, the oldest girls' school in Manipur has stood high in the esteem of her colleagues. It is really a great moment for the principal, the staff and the students of this school at this hour. There are roses, roses and roses on her way.
