TRIBES IN TRANSITION
Tribal designers, artists and professionals meet at the Adivasi Academy in Tejgadh, Gujarat to explore the roles of art, design and technology for the development of tribal communities in India from October 20-24
Tribal Design Forum – India’s only community of design and creative professionals from various tribes of India is organising a five-day bootcamp titled ‘Tribes in Transition’ for multidisciplinary professionals for participants from all over India, in partnership with the Adivasi Academy and Bhasha with the support of India Tourism Mumbai and the District Administration of Chotaudepur.
The five-days bootcamp will be attended by professionals from various sectors from 19 states and 15 tribes who shall explore how art, design and technology can contribute towards the development of tribal communities in the areas Craft, Textile, Fashion, Tourism and Placemaking, Ecology, Biodiversity, Food, Agriculture, Education, Healthcare sectors among others.
Architects, artists, designers, photographers, social entrepreneurs, researchers, social scientists, anthropologists, linguistic scholars, academicians, musicians, writers and other professionals from the states of Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Kashmir, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Karnataka, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Creative professionals and experts belonging to Angami, Banjara, Bhil, Bot, Dongria Kondh, Garasia, Kachari, Kharia, Lepcha, Mahli, Munda, Oraon, Rathwa, Santhal, Tangkhul and Yerukula tribes, amongst others, will be joining in this first ever meet organized for the design and creative professionals of the Tribal Design Forum.

Online interaction with domain experts from San Salvador/USA, The Netherlands and Nepal/UK will also be organised so that the participants could be exposed to the innovative best practices in art, design and technology that is being developed as solutions to some of the challenges faced by indigenous communities.
During the five days of the TDF Tribes in Transition Bootcamp, participants will get an opportunity to explore and understand the tribal culture and lifestyle of the Chotaudepur district through daily experiential trips and also interact with members of the communities. Multidisciplinary workshops will be organised at the Adivasi Academy for the visiting participants.
An exhibition of images of various tribal communities – an outcome of the annual photography contest organised by Tribal Design Forum will also be up on display. Film screenings of select films make by tribal filmmakers from various tribes of India – fiction, non-fiction, documentary and animation will be screened at the Museum of Voice at the Adivasi Academy.
Cultural performances shall also form part of the experiential bootcamp. The exhibition and films screenings will be open to public so that the local residents could join in the celebration of contemporary tribal art, design, films and culture. The bootcamp shall be open to the public everyday 11 am onwards.
Tribal Design Forum in partnership with 1EQ Edutech shall also be setting up a self-learning centre for all tribal SSC examination aspirants at the Adivasi Academy. The study material – both in print and digital form, for the preparation of SSC examination shall be made available to SSC examination aspirants in the region through the centre at the Adivasi Academy.
The participants from the north are quite excited to participate in the TDF Bootcamp.
The north-east co-ordinator of Tribal Design Forum, Kevisedenuo Margaret Zinyu, says, “There are quite a few design, craft and textile professionals from the north east, especially from Nagaland, Manipur and Assam who will be participating in this unique bootcamp. We find it extremely important to get an exposure from national and international domain experts, and more importantly get an opportunity to interact, share and learn from professionals from various tribes of India.”
